The problem is that iDevices and QuickTime are not able to read VobSub or PGS subtitles. So OCR (Optical Character Recognition) technology is needed to convert Image-Based subtitles to Text-Based. Hard Subtitles vs Soft Subtitles: Hard subtitles are part of the video itself (superimposed text), they cannot be removed or extracted, while Soft Subtitles are rendered as a separate track in a video file and not part of the video itself, so it can be switched ON/OFF and thus can be extracted.
